Pet Health Insurance is usually divided into three major categories. Often within each category you many also find different plan features usually called Gold, Silver or Bronze. These plans vary with benefits and amount of coverage. Another factor is pet insurance may be annual plan, lifetime plan or per incident plan. Remember, premiums may vary each year as the pet gets older. Also can your plan get cancelled?
Comprehensive Accident and Illness Coverage: A complete plan covers surgery, prescription medicines, vet bills and physical rehabilitation for accidents (broken bones, lacerations, car accidents, etc.) and illnesses, hereditary conditions and serious illness (ex: heart condition, kidney failure, cancer). A wellness plan may be optional for routine veterinary visits, flea and heartworm prevention and vaccinations.
Accident: Limited coverage that provides benefits only if your pet is injured in an accident and excludes illness-related medical bills.
Wellness: Includes routine veterinary checkups, flea and heartworm prevention and vaccinations.
In addition, with each plan you must also consider amount of insurance, deductibles, co-payments, exclusions, claim processing, cancellation, and premium increases. There are also less expensive (non-insurance) pet reimbursement plans offering limited coverage and benefits.
We use the Insurance Policy Scoring (patent pending) system to compare price, coverage and claims payment on an easy to understand numerical scoring basis.
