the Biggest Risk in Pet Insurance

Information

What is the biggest risk in pet health insurance?

While we believe pet health insurance is a worthwhile form of protection there is one policy term and condition that concerns us.

It is the cancellation clause that appears in many, but not all policies.

In some policies, the insurance company can cancel a policy for any reason

For example, if your pet suddenly suffers from a serious illness, such as an epileptic attack there are three considerations

  • One, is the sickness or illness covered?
  • Two, in some policies recurring attacks may not be covered, and
  • Three, policies may be cancelled, probably because claim costs are now considered excessive

In the instance of cancellation, a pet owner will face the consequences of trying to secure another insurance policy. However, the illnesses or sickness will now be considered a pre-existing condition. The probability of finding another insurance policy at a reasonable cost is very slim with the sickness or illness also being excluded from coverage.

The only solution is to carefully read the insurance policy and obtain in writing from the insurance company the circumstance under which a policy can be cancelled.
